With an eye at speeding up in-flight Internet connectivity services for passengers of European commercial airlines, Eutelsat Communications proudly announced its new aeronautical mobile service, Eutelsat Air Access.
The new satellite Internet service will leverage the 90 Gbps total capacity of Eutelsat’s KA-SAT high throughput satellite. Eutelsat Air Access will use ViaSat SurfBeam 2 technology to give each airliner speeds of up to 100 Mbps. In addition to satellite internet access, Eutelsat’s in-flight service will provide video streaming and GMS services on passengers’ tablets, smartphones, and laptops.
Eutelsat is teaming up with LiveTV to roll out Eutelsat Air Access. LiveTV provides commercial airlines with live in-flight entertainment and connectivity services. Its partnership with Eutelsat covers the delivery, integration, and maintenance of on-board equipment associated with Eutelsat Air Access. It will also cover the operation of Wi-Fi Internet access services and video streaming.
Eutelsat Air Access will enter service during the second half of 2013. It will initially be available in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin. If it proves popular and profitable, Eutelsat has plans to use other Ka-band satellites to expand Air Access’ service area.
